Storage Tips

Boxing
Start by listing all the items you are going to pack and their approximate sizes.

Get boxes, tape and wrapping paper or material to store all the stuff. Try to fill each box without making them too heavy or not full enough. Bulging cartons tip when stacked, while half-full cartons tend to collapse.

Pack heavy items, such as books, in smaller boxes. Try to keep the weight around 30-35 pounds per carton for easier handling.

Write the contents on the box so that you know what's in it and keep a list of the boxes at your home or office. If it's fragile, be sure to mark it on several sides of the box.

Organization
Place items you use frequently (or may need to use soon) near the front of the storage room.

Stand sofas and mattresses up on end, as this will take up less space. Cover them from the top to keep the dust off. Use special fitted covers for the best protection.

Try to leave a walkway if you will need to get to stuff at the rear of the unit.

Try not to lean anything against thewall, as this will allow for better ventilation in the unit.

Fragile Items
A chest of drawers is a great place to store small, fragile items. Use towels or clothes to secure them in a drawer.

Dishes and glassware need to be wrapped individually and then fill the voids with extra packing materials.

Use a pad when packing mirrors and paintings before putting them in a box.

Always store paintings and mirrors on an edge, never flat.

Preserving Items
Books should not be on the floor during storage. Line the box with plastic to stop moisture from getting to the books. Be sure to fill the voids with packing material to stop the books from hitting each other.

Consider getting pallets to store your stuff on rather than the floor.

When storing clothes, use mothballs or cedar chips to reduce moisture. Clean all blankets, draperies and clothing before storing.

You can use machine oil or grease to coat the surface of tools and other metal objects to prevent rusting.

Electronics & Appliances
If you are storing appliances like dishwashers and washing machines, be sure there is no water inside. Tape the doors shut for transport but open slightly for storing. If you can, put a cover on it so it doesn't get scratched.

The best way to transport electronics is by packing them in their original boxes. Put wires and screws in the boxes as well.

When you take something apart, be sure to put the connecting pieces in a zip-lock and tape it to one of the parts so they will not get mixed up with other pieces.

Other Precautions
Never store the following items: gasoline, paints, acids or other flammable, combustible and corrosive materials. Never store any food items.
